Tucked away in the quiet lanes of Dehradun, Old British House is a century-old colonial residence with sloping metal roofs, wide verandas, and a garden that has seen generations of stories unfold. The house is owned and maintained by Shri Gyan Sehgal and his wife Smt. Seema Sehgal, with Harshit helping run the property along with a dedicated team of locally appointed staff — creating employment and encouraging reverse migration in the region.
The property is surrounded by mature gardens where birdsong replaces city noise. The architecture retains its old-world character — high ceilings, wooden beams, and doors that open out to the green canopy outside. Over the years, more than 6,000 guests have stayed here, many returning season after season.
6,000+ guests hosted — a testament to the trust and warmth that defines every visit to Old British House.

I had a very pleasant stay at the Old British House. It's a quiet refuge from the busy streets surrounding Dehradun. The garden is beautiful and the house has all the basic amenities. There are some very nice cafés and restaurants close by and a lot of nice hikes in the Himalaya mountains. Mussoorie and especially Landour are just an hour driving and really stole my heart. It's a very good base camp to explore the area and Harshit's parents are very warm and welcoming people. Thank you for making me feel at home!
Harshit has put in a lot of effort to maintain the originality of his century old house for his guests to be able to enjoy. The property is very lovely, and is far from noise and the everyday bustle of most towns. His mum is darling lady who lives by the motto "I feed my guests what I feed my family", and so has whipped up delicious healthy meals during our stay there. They own two well behaved doggos! To put things in perspective, the property is so beautiful that it has been fully booked for an upcoming wedding. So I'd highly recommend you to give this place a try.
In brief, this is an amazing sparkling clean place with a great location and the sweetest host/family. Harshit is a wonderful caring host, although I was supposed to arrive 8 pm to his place, I got delayed and arrived at midnight, and he and his wife were waiting for me, with a warm smile. He is very knowledgeable about the area, and he gave me great tips on where to go and what/where to shop. The room was super clean and has antique character. There is a communal kitchen that I used to cook and fridge to store my food. Mornings here are amazing, so quiet, with a lovely garden and chirping birds. I am coming again, bringing my family this time: it is a place where you can feel home!
Terrific stay at Old British House! The location is north of "downtown" Dehradun so you're away from the hustle and bustle, even more so because OBH is tucked on a residential street, a couple hundred metres away from the road. It's quiet, it's peaceful, it's everything the heart desires on a retreat. The room was cozy and had everything I needed, personally. It's aptly described as "Indian Zen". The owners are lovely to chat with.
Old British House in Dehradun has become one of my go-to getaways over time. The heritage architecture, lush greenery, and serene atmosphere make it such a pleasing and refreshing place to stay. It's rare to find a place that blends history, comfort, and nature so effortlessly. The rooms are cozy, the upkeep is excellent, and the hosts make sure you feel at home on every visit.
Stayed in the glass room for three nights on a work trip with my coworkers. It was actually a really relaxing spot for being on the clock. The staff were helpful and the location made getting around easy. Breakfast was solid, the poha and bread omelette were exactly what I needed in the morning. Definitely worth it.
Just got back from a lovely 3 night getaway with my friend and honestly this place was exactly what we needed. We stayed in the garden view cottage which was so peaceful and cozy, perfect for unwinding after months of city chaos. What I loved most was how quiet everything was — no traffic noise, no crowds, just pure relaxation.
One of the most vintage properties for stay with family and friends in Dehradun, gives you a Old British era feel with homely atmosphere and good vibes. This property has good garden space, the housekeeping staff is very good and friendly. The owners of the property are courteous and helpful. Overall good experience.
Stayed here for two nights with a friend for work and honestly, it was exactly what we needed. The cottage is well located, quiet, and we had a garden view which was nice. The double bed was comfortable and the space felt private. Got a lot done during our stay and slept well at night. Would definitely come back.
